The World Health Organization advocated mass dog vaccination campaigns and management of canine population and also trying to improve accessibility to post-exposure vaccination to check the Rabies cases.
“Rabies elimination efforts includes re assuring post-exposure rabies vaccination available to all in equitable manner. This should be the key element of rabies elimination” said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh,regional director,WHO South-East Asia region.
This special treatments are gonna take a place , ahead of World Rabies Day on September 28.
Countries like Thailand,Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have been witnessed a drastic change in human rabies deaths after implementing these measures , Dr poonam requested and suggested other countries to follow the same.
Rabies kills nearly 25,000 people in the WHO South-East Asia region.Shocking fact is 40% of people exposed to dog bites are children in the age group of 5-15 years.
Communities are playing a vital role in eliminating Rabies “Simple but important measures such as vaccinating pet dogs and cats against rabies, thoroughly washing dog bite wounds with soap and water, and taking rabies vaccination when exposed to bite of a rabid or suspected animal, will strengthen rabies elimination efforts,” she said.
After all it’s good initiative on spreading an importance of dog vaccination will help our society to eradicate rabies and this will create awareness between people.
